How do you find a psychiatrist in NYC?

New York City has one of the largest concentrations of psychiatrists in the US, if not the world. So why is it so hard to find one? And why will no one take my insurance? I hear from patients all the time how hard it is to find a new doctor.

Many people begin by searching for “top psychiatrist in New York” or “top psychiatrist in Los Angeles” but when even a simple Google search for “psychiatrists accepting new patients” yields disappointingly few leads, it’s impossible not to feel frustrated.

On the subject of insurance, the truth is, it is incredibly difficult for a solo psychiatrist in private practice to work with insurances.  It is not unfair to say that insurance companies demand a great deal and reimburse providers for only a small fraction of the work required to provide the best possible patient care.

Many patients can receive reimbursement for the majority of their treatment by utilizing their out-of-network benefits. In fact, this reimbursement means that, in some instances, patients can actually have less out of pocket expenses than if they saw a doctor “in-network”.

I always advise patients to check their out of network benefits before scheduling. We use a system that generates a detailed, industry standard invoice accepted by all carriers and provide this to our patients to submit to their carrier.

Services such as reimbursify.com can simplify this process even further!

Here are the places to start looking.

1.    NYC WELL

New York City has an excellent searchable database of clinics and providers in the city. Search for psychiatrists and clinics in your zip code and filter by your insurance carrier.

2.    Insurance carrier website.

Go to your insurance carrier website and look at the “Find A Provider” function.  These may require logging in but allow you to search for providers that are in-network with your specific plan.

3.    Medical Center Websites

Most major medical systems have a Faculty Associates practice. A search of any major search engine for “Faculty Associates Psychiatry” should yield the contact information. The coordinator in the clinic will ask you which insurance you have and connect you with a provider.

4.    Psychology Today

Psychology Today has more of a focus on individual clinicians and smaller clinics. It is an excellent searchable database of psychiatrists and psychotherapists. It also allows you to filter by providers in-network with your insurance. See my profile on Psychology Today here:
